The Decanting Myth Explored

To decant or not to decant, that is the question...

After the recent demise of the world's best website, namely www.wine-journal.com, I'm now on the look out for others. Wine Library TV has made a good impression so far, and the episode on decanting, though not definitive, is highly recommended. Don't be put off by that sullen look on the presenter's face - he does end up with a smile on his face at the end, and who would blame him given what he's tasting! Anyway, see what you think.

The Potato Points (PP) System

Being a bloke and a nerd I like to list things and to give things scores. This is no doubt the result of a problematic relationship with my first potty. All the same, this is how the scores on this site work.

0-1.5 PP = Not recommended at all: an absolutely rubbish experience
2-3.5 PP = At best average: for people who really don't care what's in the glass so long as it's not empty
4-5.5 PP = Recommended: a good, stable experience
6-7.5 PP = Strong recommendation: a very good quality wine that offers a big experience
8-9.5 PP = A very strong recommendation: a very big wine that is edging towards a total quality experience
10 PP = Utter perfection! Do not miss out!

If the points are about wine, then they are worked out as follows: a maximum of 2 points for colour and clarity; a maximum of 6 points for the nose; a maximum of 8 points for the taste and length; and a maximum of 4 for the overall experience. To further complicate things the resulting score out of 20 is then halved to give a final ratio between 0 and 10. I hope that's confusing enough for you! At least it's not as bizzare as Parker's 100 point system...
